Hair Journey

YEAR 1 (Oct 2010-Oct 2011)

For the first year of my hair journey my routine was very simplistic, and primarily revolved around doing little to no manipulation to my hair which include not combing, brushing, or washing my hair for months on end.  I Yes, would go for 2-3 months at a time without washing my hair, I would keep it braid up, moisturized, and under a wig cap while I was at home or a wig/lace front when I left my house.  I wasn't picky about what products I used, I switched it up pretty often.  But I will list the products I used the majority of the time at the bottom of this page.  For me the only thing I owe to my first year of  hair growth is LOW TO NO MANIPULATION!

After Year 1, not quite BSL, but almost there

Products I used:

Shampoo:
- non-specific, changed all the time depending on what I had in the house
- I only washed my hair about 4 times the whole year
- Only used heat on my hair about 3 times the whole year
- Kept my hair in single braids the whole year, except the first 3 months I had cornrows.  I found that single braids held up better for a longer period without loosening and getting too puffy under my wigs
- No Relaxers for a whole Year

Conditioner:
- Queen Helene Super Cholestorol Hair Conditioning Cream

Leave-in Conditioner:
- Mane 'N Tail Olive Oil Complex Herbal Gro Spray Therapy

Heat Protector:
- TreSemme' Heat Tamer Spray

Moisturizers:
- Shea Butter Leave-in Conditioning Repair Cream
- Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Creme
- One N Only Argan Oil

Goals for Year 1: BSL
- I didn't end up reaching BSL but I came close enough so I still view it as a success

YEAR 2 (January 2012- March 2013)

COMPARISON YEAR #1 VS. YEAR #2
I trimmed my ends after this pic was taken.....my goal is to get to line 11 by next year.

Goals for Year 2: MBL and Thicker, I want to reach 6 inches on my Length Check Shirt!

For year #2 of my hair journey I stuck with the same concept.  This is a concept that I will always stick with because it is what works for me, which is no to low manipulation for months on end.  For some reason this past year I wore my real hair out more often.  Almost every time I washed my hair I would straighten it, check my growth, and wear it out for a good week or 2.  I would still wash my hair every 2-3 months.  I noticed this year even though I put heat in my hair a bit more often my hair grew seemingly faster then year #1.  Midway through yr #2 I gave myself a drastic trim and within a couple months it all just grew back.  I feel like I found the perfect products for my hair.  Although I know for certain that no to low manipulation has had the greatest affect in my hair journey, I am also aware that products have played a part as well.  Below I will list the products I have been using.  It is a bit different from yr #1.

Products I used:
Shampoo:
- non-specific, changed all the time depending on what I had in the house
- The only time I would put heat in my hair was immediately after washing it and I would wear it out for 1-2 weeks before braiding it back up.
- Kept my hair in single braids for most of the year.  I found that single braids held up better for a longer period without loosening and getting too puffy under my wigs
- Almost always wigging it out, keeping my hair protected, and moisturized.
- No Relaxers for a whole Year and still have not had a relaxer!
- NO ROUTINE OF WHEN TO WASH, WHEN TO MOISTURIZE, WHEN TO CONDITION, I JUST DID IT WHEN I FELT LIKE IT, REMEMBERED, OR HAD TIME.

Conditioner:
- Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner

Leave-in Conditioner:
- Mane 'N Tail Olive Oil Complex Herbal Gro Spray Therapy

Heat Protector:
- Silk Elements MegaSilk Heat Protection Spray or TreSemme' Heat Tamer Spray

Moisturizers:
- S Curl Moisturizer
- Jamaican Black Castor Oil
- Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
- One N Only Argan Oil

*** One thing I have learned is NEVER let anyone else trim your hair expect for you or someone you truly trust that will only trim what needs to be trimmed.  I trim my own ends or my mom trims what I tell her to trim.  When I used to get trims by a ex-stylist, lets just say I would always end up with an extreme hair-cut when it was all said and done.  And she would find a need to cut my hair almost everytime I sat in her chair.  I ALWAYS TRIM MY HAIR AT THE END OF EVERY YEAR AND SOMETIMES MIDWAY THROUGH THE YEAR AS WELL.  I DUST MY ENDS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AS NEEDED :)
